Clams Anyone?

Curtis, Avery, and I went clam digging with the Murata Family Tuesday. This is a Japanese tradition that occurs starting in June. It was quite and experience! We went in the morning when the tide was fully out. We spent about 3 hours digging. Once you've collected the clams, you must put them in a container of sea water so the can breathe and expel the sand from their shells. You have to change the water every hour for about 4 hours.

The Muratas were so gracious to make us homemade clam chowder, clam pasta, curry and rice, salad, and tea pudding. It was all so wonderful....especially the chowder! I learned that during cooking the clam shells will open up. If the shells don't open, then that means the clam died in transportation and they are not good to eat. How cool is that?!?!?!? It was really neat to watch. We had a great time with the Muratas and are so blessed to have had that experience. Enjoy the pictures!

Such a neat experience--especially for Avery. And yummo! That food looks delicious. I don't think you will be finding that fresh of clam chowder in Tully when you return. Live it up while you can! :)

That was really interesting, who would have thought there would be such a process to digging for clams? Don't do seafood much but it sure looks & sounds yummy. Keep doing "new" things 'cause time is running out...Much Love

That is neat. I LOVE clam chowder, but somehow I don't think Campbell's is the same as Murata's! That sure did look like ALOT of food on that table. How many people were you guys feeding? hehehe - love you and miss you much....Aunt Tessi
